In an exceptionally clear presentation, 1%’r and zillionaire Nick Hanauer explains in his TED Presentation, “Beware Fellow Plutocrats, the Pitchforks are Coming”  why practicing paneugenesis or using selfish, selfless, synergy creates better. He uses the idea of how a $15 minimum wage will benefit all in contrast to currently poplar idea of trickle down economics.

In a previous conversation with colleagues and friends I had mentioned, to their disbelief that I thought President Reagan had many policies as president that hurt many of us. Of the many things he did to hurt us was to get people to believe the blatantly false claim that “Trickle Down” economics helps everyone, that is if the rich make more money, everyone does better. Mr. Hanauer explains how this is NOT TRUE and why, I encourage you to listen to his perspective.

Although I loved his presentation and his powerful and important message, it would have been even better if he had  also included the idea of being good environmental steward or doing what is right for the environment.  After all, we must always remember, our economy will always be a subset of our ecology. Without a prosperous ecology, we will not have an economy. The news has recently noted problems associated with worksite health programs. With these issues, should any worksites even bother to  attempt worksite health promotion programs (WHP)? With William McPeck, we wrote an article, “Should You Even Bother with Worksite Wellness Today?”  for the August 2014 (Volume 5, Issue 2) of the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP) publication. You can read on page 3 why WHP is something to bother with because it makes an organization more effective, efficient and more profitable. If it doesn’t, its not being done right. After all, making an organization more effective by improving the workplace and making it a better place to work is the only reason to bother with WHP. How events are run creates a message.  This ideas is brilliantly captured by Dov Siedman’s book, “How” (See Fantastic Book: “How”to Generate Universal Benefits)

Health focused events that serve unhealthy foods send conflicting messages just as environmentalists driving SUV’s or Hummers, overweight nutritionists, or smoking doctors.

A great example of practicing and sending a consistent message with how an event was conducted was demonstrated at the Appalachian UNC Energy (Sustainability) Summit. The event was a carbon neutral event that was zero waste and included practices such as a plant strong eating style to support a healthier planet.
