Use Stress & Fear to Make 2016 Your Best Year!

That is right, in 2016 move toward what you fear and embrace stress. It is only when you do this that you will be able to make 2016 your best year ever. Endless articles will come out about how to make this years resolutions stick or they will tell you to adjust expectations. What you aim for may or may not be what is right for you but you will never know if you don’t do anything. Now it is time to find out by doing something – anything, even, or especially if it scares you and or stresses you out. This is not a plan about how to be successful, but it is a plan to help you find your way.

As I write this it reminds me of one of the best things I got from going to Temple. I now consider myself an atheist Jew because I like how Judiasm commits to improving the community for all. To me many ideas in Judaism support the concept of paneugenesis in that it encourages interactions so everyone and everything benefits. Anyway, one of the best things I got from Temple was an introduction Jack Reimer’s Prayer, “We Cannot Merely Pray to You”. To me Jack is saying that we must do, not just hope. To me this is also what McGonigal, Crum and many other’s of science are saying when they give us  reasons why we can and should act:

We cannot merely pray to you, O God, to end war;
For we know that You have made the world in a way
That we must find our own path to peace
Within ourselves and with our neighbors.

We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to end starvation;
For You have already given us the resources
With which to feed the entire world,
If we would only use them wisely.

We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to root out prejudice;
For You have already given us eyes
With which to see the good in all people,
If we would only use them rightly.

We cannot merely pray to You, O God,  to end despair;
For You have already given us the power
To clear away slums and to give hope,
If we would only use our power justly.

We cannot merely pray to You, O God, to end disease;
For You have already given us great minds
With which to search out cures and healing,
If we would only use them constructively.

Therefore we pray to You instead, O God,
For strength, determination and will power,
To do instead of just pray,
To become instead of merely to wish.

–Jack Riemer

To build on this, I strongly recommend you read Kelly McGonigal’s excellent book,  The Upside of Stress: Why Stress is Good for you & How to Get Good At it!  I thought it was so good that for the last night of Chanukah I gave my girls copies of her engage chapter and explained, “This will help you change your lives for the better.”

final_what_we_fear_artwork_wide-78d18fd2b932b4af374a239e53e3afac7498338f-s1000-c85

Then I was listening to NPR’s TED Radio hour. This radio hour was about 😱”What we Fear“😱 and I realized they were discussing the same thing as Kelly McGonigal – or how to embrace fear. Fear after all is just another form of stress. We all have heard FEAR explained as False Evidence Appearing Real or to do what we fear most to become a better person, etc.

I wish you all a great 2016. To help make 2016 great I encourage you to Listen Here to TED Radio Hour show, “What We Fear”. I believe from listening to this it will help you decide what you know need to do – today, not tomorrow. I look forward to hearing about how you are making 2016 a great year from which everyone and everything will benefit.

🌏🚀🚀We Can Have Both!🚀🚀🌏

Unknown

Having just read The Martian and the recent Matt Damon hit, The Martian, this TED presentation is interesting. Stellar astronomer and TED Senior Fellow Lucian Walkowicz works with NASA’s Kepler’s mission and provides a useful perspective. To me she is saying, if we have a backup plan, we often do not take care of what we have as we should. The issue with life and earth is that there is no backup. This also relates to Risk Homeostasis Theory (see previous posts) that shows when we feel safer, we act more dangerously. Most advantageous would be to think how can we act to benefit today AND tomorrow!

To me what is important in this message is we can have both, it is not should we take care of the planet or plan to live in the stars – we should do both. This has been what I promote for health, it is not should we prevent disease or promote health but promote health for a better life and prevention happens because of the better life created! From this example, we should be working to make life sustainable, exciting and better on earth while we also look for possibilities in the stars – the best of both!

The message I walk away with from this short (5:50) presentation, “Let’s Not Use Mars as a Backup Planet” is we should be consistently and consciously working to generate comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits! I look forward to hearing how you Practice Paneugenesis and hearing about the resulting benefits we all get to enjoy.

💤😴Wonderful Sleep😴💤

My daughter came home from college and my other daughter is a senior in High School. With their academic and social pressures I notice that they seem to act as if sleep as an unimportant luxury they will indulge in if they have time. As I am learning, sleep is a valuable and important NECESSITY, not a luxury.

Many of us have heard about general benefits such as sleep fights off colds, improves exercise, keeps appetite hormones in check, helps prevent migraines, helps blood sugar balance, and even fights obesity. I am now learning there is so much more. In essence, what we generally had known seems to be common sense, that is when we are better rested, we function better and are less likely to do harmful impulse acts.

If you are interested, I made this post so you can learn a little more about the value of sleep. It is what I will use for our family education night. What I learned is that sleep can give me a better chance of creating the the life I desire, not just avoid what I don’t want. The life I desire is one where my actions demonstrate my values and my actions leave me feeling good, which you know if you follow my posts means practicing paneugenesis so everyone and everything benefits.

To have a desirable life, sleep is essential. After all, only when we rest can we hope to generate comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits. In other words we need to be rested to Practice Paneugenesis and create the life we want.

To clarify and learn about many wonderful benefits associated with sleep, below I  posted 3 excellent TED Presentations. The first by Russell Foster explains why we need sleep and its importance. The second presentation by Jeff Iliff explains a great reason to get sleep by explaining how sleep helps us think well. The final presentation by Arianna Huffington gives a good short summary about the benefits of sleep.

After seeing these 3 presentations, only 36 minutes total, I was much more able to understand the value and importance of sleep. Knowing and understanding the value of sleep has helped me make sleep a priority. Enjoy and happy slumbers!😴💤

💤😴Russell Foster (21:46) explains, “Why do we sleep?”😴💤

💤😴Jeff Iliff (11:41) discusses “One More Reason to Get a Good Night’s Sleep”.😴💤

💤😴Arianna Huffington (4:01) explains how to succeed by getting more sleep.😴💤

Mindset Research – Amazing Presentation

I am reading Kelly McGonigal’s book, The Upside of Stress: Why Stress is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It. So far it is great. I will post more about her great work soon – I am still reading – this post, however, is about the work of Dr. Alia Crum. Her amazing work focuses on Mindset. Kelly McGonigal cites her often in her book so I looked up Dr. Crum.

Below is Dr. Crum’s TED Presentation: Change Your Mindset, Change the Game. She explains how our belief actually changes our physiological reality, not just our mind. She even documents how our mind can alter our feelings associated with the ingestion of food based on what we believe we are eating. Much of this has to do with the placebo effect. Enjoy, I will post again as I learn more.

Dr. Crum’s excellent work on Mindset builds on Carol Dweck’s Growth Mindset work she outlined in her TED Presentation and her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. You can get more information about Dr. Dweck’s ideas on this post here.

Getting back to Kelly McGonigal, I am reading her book after seeing and posting here about her fantastic TED presentation, Stress Can Improve Your Health – see below.

By the way, did you know Kelly is one of the amazing identical twins? Her twin sister, Jane McGonigal is the author of SuperBetter: A Revolutionary Approach to Getting Stronger, Happier, Braver and More Resilient and Reality is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World.

Books by both of these professionals are excellent. Most useful in both their books is their excellent use of existing research to support their unique hypotheses in all their books about how to be better and foster improved results.

Of course I love this work because they provide great information about how to practice paneugenesis or how to generate comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits.

I have already posted many times about Jane’s work, if you are interested you can access those posts here, here, and here.  I look forward to learning more and hearing about how you use these ideas in your life. Enjoy!

Great Development for Renewables

3054217-poster-p-1-how-google-and-other-giant-corporations-are-going-100-renewab

Great news about big corporations going to renewables. These changes could have a positive cascading effect on the industry. The article explains…

“When Google opens its newest data center next year—on the grounds of a former coal power plant in Alabama—it will run on 100% renewable energy. That’s emblematic of where the entire company is headed: Eventually, every time you search Google, or check Gmail, or watch YouTube, it will run on wind, solar, or some other type of clean power.

Google is already the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the world. Last week, it signed up to buy an extra 842 megawatts of new clean power, taking the company’s total commitment up to 2 gigawatts, or the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road.

But it’s not the only massive corporation to commit to 100% renewable energy. So has IKEA. And Unilever. And Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson, Nestle, Nike, Adobe, Philips, Proctor & Gamble, Starbucks, Walmart, and several of the other largest companies in the world.

All have joined the RE100, a project that invites influential corporations to go fully renewable…”

The Simple Choice

I saw this on a Forks Over Knives newsletter and I wanted to share.

Remember this choice is good for you, good for the environment and good for all. In other words it is a way to practice paneugenesis by generating comprehensive benefits by creating interactions (your food choice) so everyone and everything benefits!

Make it a Great Day for everyone and everything!
