Updated: “The Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition”

I started reading Colin Campbell’s “The Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition”. I previously read and was mesmerized by his, “The China Study”, it was great. I recommend both. I know “The China Study” is a Bad name for a book, but the content is fantastic.

With regard to “The Whole”, in the first section he emphasizes that he is very upset with the system and wants the truth to be known. He is upset because he says money interests have silenced the words of science and the strong and valid findings  showing nutrition is more powerful than any other method to promote health and treat disease. He says nutrition is being silenced because it does not support our established way of understanding how things work or our current paradigm. He makes it clear that nutrition findings are being challenged because it may do harm to how many make money today.

An example of the influence of money on research was published on October 6, 2019 in the New York Times, “Scientist Who Discredited Meat Guidelines Didn’t Report Past Food Industry Ties” by Tara Parker-Pope and Anahad O’Connor. These scientists are using the same techniques described in Do Not Let Deniers Doubt Dissuade post by supporting doubt. Doubt is instilled through misdirection or taking attention away from facts just as magician misdirects a persons attention away so people thinks the trick is magic.  This analogy is used in Naomi Oreskes’ excellent film, “Merchants of Doubt“.

To support his post, I am sharing a powerful part of the beginning. He explains that if Whole Food Plant Based (WFPB) nutrition were a pill, what he says could be could be called “Eunutria”, its label would have this powerful list of scientifically proven effects:

  • Prevents 95% of all cancers including those caused by environmental toxins
  • Prevents nearly all heart attacks and strokes
  • Reverses even severe heart disease
  • Prevents and reverses type 2 diabetes so quickly and profoundly  that after 3 days it is dangerous to keep using insulin
  • Gets you to your ideal weight in a healthy sustainable way
  • Eliminates most migraines, acne, colds and flue, chronic pain and intestinal distress
  • Improves energy
  • Cures Erectile dysfunction
  • Slows and possibly reverses global warming
  • Reduces groundwater contamination
  • Ends the need for deforestation
  • Shuts down factory farms
  • Reduces malnutrition and dislocation among worlds poorest

It is results and information like this that has encouraged and motivated me to do my best to adopt a Whole Food Plant Based eating plan. By eating this way I can feel good about my choices because it is a way to use selfish, selfless, synergy to practice paneugenesis which means I contribute to comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits.

Not only do I help everyone and everything benefit, it provides me with a good feeling for  doing something good, gives me energy and vitality and also helps prevent things I want to avoid. Why would I want to make any other choice with regard to food? What do you think? Let me know how you help everyone and everything benefit.

Serendipity? Don’t “Have” a Nice Day – Make it So!

Make it so

People often say “Have a Nice Day”, as if will just happen. I try to always say, “Make it a Great Day!” To “have” a nice day means hope it works out while “Make” it a nice day means put effort into influencing the days events. I guess I take my guidance from Captain Picard who often remarked, “Make it so”. It was these thoughts that relate to how we can “Create Serendipity” or the occurrence of beneficial events or happenings.

One of my favorite saying is,”Situations turn out best for those who make of the best the way things turn out.” In other words things happen, like my accident that left me paralyzed and brain damaged, but I made the best of it and recovered – did I have a choice?  To me serendipity doesn’t just happen, if we prepare, we can beneficially influence what happens in our lives. We can’t know what will happen but being more skilled and capable provides us with the ability to adapt and use our resources to make it so.

We can’t control many things in life but going with the flow is giving in to the will of others. Most of us, myself included, want to have a positive impact on the world and to have a better life. Better to me doesn’t mean just more comfortable, but more meaningful. Making meaning is not always comfortable because it means pushing boundaries and challenging values and beliefs of ones own and of others. The value of this is that when we live in line with our values and do what we think is important, happiness is a byproduct or side effect without it being our direct intention. In this way we can have meaningful, beneficial results, and desirable side effects.

When we seek happiness, it generally evades us like a soap bar we try to grab in the shower as Kashdan explained in “The Upside of Your Dark Side“. A great read that I recommend because it highlights the value of being a whole person and the benefits of what many have portrayed as negative emotions. Evolution has its reasons.

upside

After our house fire April 2014,  I carelessly said to my wife, we will be better because of this. She didn’t see it and became very upset with me (probably not the right thing to say at that time). But still that was my perspective. I like it when things work out. After a lot of work and effort and times of distress, which is probably where my wife was focused,  I am happy to say, our family and our house are now better than they were. Here is the original story I posted about the fire.

The idea to develop the idea of serendipity was sparked by a Fast Company  article, 4 Habits fo Lucky People and the reading of 2 Steve Jobs books – Steve Jobs and Becoming Steve Jobs: The Evolution of a Reckless Upstart Into a Visionary Leader. Both of the Jobs’s books made it clear that both Apple & Pixar’s success didn’t just happen, he helped cause it to happen. In the case of Apple, they were on the brink of bankruptcy when he took over in 1997. In other words, he influenced serendipity and  beneficial events or occurrences happened – it seems he caused them to happen…

I turned this idea into a presentation, “Serendipitous Wellness: Can We Cause it to Happen?” for the 2015 National Wellness Conference. This presentation was about how we can cause a better life and how. The link below will provide you the PDF of the presentation.

It seems that serendipity happens when we generate comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits. Evidence seems to suggest that selfish, selfless, synergy or the practice of paneugenesis is how to cause serendipity!

Contact me if you have questions or want to talk about how to make it happen for yourself and or your organization. I look forward to talking with you and also hearing about how you cause serendipity.

All Benefit By Ending the Oil EndGame

Amory Lovins provides a powerful presentation about the future we need to create. To me this seems like what will happen, and is something we should be working to make happen, because not only is it better for all, it is also more profitable. Looking at the future realistically instead of through the eyes of those that are afraid of changing the status quo, i.e. the oil and gas industry, they suffer from what Prospect Theory calls the the Endowment Effect. We should be optimistic about a better tomorrow.

Watch Amory’s powerful presentation to be more optimistic and enjoy what Gerald Wilde called Expectationism and how it is  better than education, engineering and enforcement(Linked)

Guerrilla Marketing Promotes Selfish, Selfless, Synergy

Guerilla Marketing Goes Green

Guerrilla Marketing Goes Green: Winning Strategies to Improve Your Profits and Your Planet is a MUST READ. Even if you are not a marketer, there is beneficial information that will help you do whatever you do better. Also, although it specifically explains how to make more money and be successful, it explains how to do this in a way where everyone and everything benefits.

For those of you who have followed me, you know my main tenet is Selfish, Selfless, Synergy or the idea of paneugenesis which means creating all good (-pan = all, -eu = good, -genesis = creating). In more formal terms the way to practice paneugenesis is to generate comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits, which is selfish, selfless, synergy. If you are interested, the video below explains the concept of Paneugenesis or Selfish, Selfless, Synergy as well as this, this, this, this, this, this, and many more posts.

Gorilla Marketing Goes Green was a great book because I learned specifically how others already have and how can going forward create interactions so everyone and everything benefits. The book also outlines how and why those interactions led to their success. The video below promotes the ideas in their book.

From my perspective their book also uses the steps I have suggest to practice paneugenesis in several posts (here, here, here):

1. Operationalize an Idealized Outcome

2. Discover Precursors

3. Optimize the Process

4. Plot Progress

Although they did not use these terms, here is how I saw them using those 4 steps.

  1. Operationalize an Idealized Outcome. Instead of doing it first, they describe the idealized outcomes created using many examples in their chapter 19 and in many stories throughout the book. In Chapter 19, the successful stories of the amazing environmentalists Amory Lovins and John Todd are described. Earlier I highlighted the presentations by Amory Lovins from the UNC Sustainability Conference I attended here and the related conference presentations here.
  2. Discover PrecursorsThroughout the book they outline and discuss the necessary precursors to create idealized outcomes. The most consistent precursors they repeatedly discuss are the advantages of doing right thing by using the Magic Triangle of Quality, Integrity and Honesty and the need to provide value to others.
  3. Optimize the Process. They  outline how to optimize the process by describing ways to help others that are not adversarial. They also discuss how it is necessary to enlarge the pie using an abundance paradigm rather than fight for a share of the pie by working from a scarcity paradigm. They also outline how to build alliances and partnerships from which both parties benefit.
  4. Plot Progress. The way they talk about progress is increased sales and satisfaction from doing the right thing and helping others and the planet succeed. An important way they emphasize to plot progress is being able to look in the mirror and know you are doing good for others and the world.

Overall, it is a great book and an important and valuable read for anybody who wants to make a positive impact. The book provides ideas about Selfish, Selfless, Synergy and how to generate comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits. I look forward to hearing about your successes!

**Special Note: In my purchase of the book I had the opportunity to personally interact with Shel Horowitz. This interaction confirmed to me he doesn’t just write about how to conduct business in a good way, it is how he conducts business. Thank you Shel!

End Food Anxiety with “In Defense of Food”

Food Anxiety No Food Anxiety

Food anxiety is trending. We are rightly concerned about what we eat and why what we are eating may or may not be good for us and the environment. We are worried because food companies seem to be more interested in selling food than supporting personal and planetary health.

Michael Pollan, in the PBS Special, “In Defense of Food”, (trailer below) takes a very straightforward approach . I have not read his book but have watched the PBS special twice. I encourage you to watch  it – it is linked here – Michael Pollan explores a cure for today’s industrially driven Western diet.

In straightforward terms this special helps us be less anxious about food as it directs us to eat things that everyone, especially our grandparents, would agree should be called food. To lessen our anxiety and with great scientific support he recommends we eat real food while staying away from technology created processed foods – for the most part. He acknowledges we cannot be perfect and helps us see a way to do better for ourselves and the planet.

The “In Defense of Food” special also supports and describes the overload of sugar in our food today as Katie Couric discusses in FedUp.  (see trailer below) FedUp is an excellent documentary about food that you can see on many venues including on NetFlix. One of the most enlightening aspect of FedUp is how it demonstrates how Big Food has become like Tobacco to mislead the consumers, described in this post. The charge that big corporations are misleading consumers to generate more sales is also now being leveled at the NFL in the revealing movie “Concussion” with Will Smith.

Overall, Michael Pollan recommends we go as close to a plant strong diet as possible for the benefits and if we can’t always do it, relax, eat better next time. As I have posted here, herehere, here, and more, making plant strong food choices will benefit personal and planetary health. This is another way to have both as described earlier and is a way to practice paneugenesis by making food choices that generate comprehensive benefits by creating interactions with food that benefit everyone and everything.

I like and intend to follow his clear message, “Eat Food, Not To Much, Mostly Plants” to Make 2016 a Great Year. I know that if I follow his recommendation I will be Creating Interactions so Everyone and Everything Benefits. I look forward to hearing about how you are making 2016 great!
