12 Days to Deming

I am doing, or taking a course called “12 Days to Deming: An Active Learning Course” by Henry Neave. It is fantastic.

I originally studied Deming during my junior year of college. I then was reintroduced in 2008. For some reason I got away from it but the principles appear to have stuck with me. I am glad much of what I do uses this philosophy. I am learning so much more now.

I am completing Day 5 today and it recommended I review the attached video. I just reviewed it and think it may be even more relevant now than when it was released in the 1980’s.  It is tough to take his words because it is so different than how things are done.  However after reviewing his work it becomes clear how to use much better ways to get things done.  While this video focuses on what should not be done, his work and my work mostly focuses on how to do things more efficiently and effectively so everyone and everything benefits over the long-term.

I look forward to learning more about these better ways so everyone and everything benefits! Deming’s philosophy is the basis for the Practice of Paneugenesis I developed.  To practice paneugenesis is to generate comprehensive improvements by creating pervasive, reciprocal, selfish, selfless, synergistic interactions so everyone and everything benefits.

Lets Give Everyone a Holiday Present

On Christmas, my thoughts are about our future. We should give ourselves and everyone a real Christmas present.  A present would be for all of us to generate comprehensive improvements by creating pervasive, reciprocal, selfish, selfless, synergistic interactions so everyone and everything benefifts. Unfortunately, there are more indications the US is engaged in other actions and is falling further behind by doing the opposite.

In the US, as we continue to look backward and attempt to recreate the past.  Despite our undeniable interdependency, we are attempting to put do this alone.  The rest of the world is moving forward.  As I noted earlierThe World is Moving Forward – The US Is Distracted…, in another example China is rushing past us with electric vehicles as to make their air clean.  Another examples indicates that By 2018, Every Bus In This Chinese Megacity Will Be Electric. Shenzhen’s 16,000 buses will be fully replaced by electric buses by the end of the year.

In addition, as they move toward more renewable and earth friendly ways so everyone and everything can benefit, China Doesn’t Want Our Trash Anymore, So We Need To Recycle Smarter. For years, China has wanted all our leftover plastic. Now that it doesn’t, the U.S. waste industry needs to adapt–quickly.

We are all in this together, we must work to Practice Paneugenesis to  cause all good by generating comprehensive improvements with pervasive, reciprocal, selfish, selfless, synergistic interactions so everyone and everything benefits.

I look forward to working together to make 2018 Great!

Make it a Great Week!

Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax Provides Timely Message

Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax is an amazingly forward thinking book. It was written in 1971.  With he passing of the GOP tax bill, this book becomes even more relevant. I encourage all to take 15 minutes to read, or watch the 25 minute video,  below.  In my view, this book has an important and extremely timely message to share.

Here is the video of the Lorax:

Dr. Seuss leaves us with this advice:

“…Plant a new Truffula.  Treat it with care.

Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.

Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.

Then the Lorax and all his friends may come back.”

Mr. Onceler has the same message Ray Anderson, the late founder of Interface Carpets shared in his TED Talk and suggesting he should go to jail for what he was doing:Image result for anderson one day people like me will go to jail

Unintentional Consent: Are you giving it?

We all want to feel good and be good.  Everyday, everything we think and do we do because we believe it will make our lives better.  Some may doubt this, however, ask yourself, would anyone engage in an action or thought because they believe it will make their life worse? Of course not.  There is a caveat, some times we do something such as overtrain or over work at something long that is painful at the moment but we do it because we believe it is worth the effort. In other words, we believe the benefits out weigh the costs.

A basic tenet of a well functioning democratic society is that it is well educated and that it has appropriate information from which to make decisions.  Currently, and as has been true for many years, despite our desire to do good and to be good, we are engaging in unintentional consent.  This relates to actions related to health, especially nutrition, the environment, and public policy.

If we want the world we desire and is possible we must take action.  To do this I remind you of the 7 C’s:

  • Accept the Challenge
  • Use Courage to act
  • Develop Competence
  • Be Committed to purpose, meaning and values
  • Make Connections to people, organizations and the environment
  • Doing this enables us to make Contributions – we can have an impact
  • Then to continually improve we must build on those Consequences

After all, to have a better world we must take action.  The by product of doing good is less bad.  As described by one of our greatest thinkers:

the-world-will-be-destroyed-not-by-those-who-do-evil-but-by-those-who-watch-them-and-do-nothing

Make it a Great Week!

The World is Moving Forward – The US Is Distracted…

For those of you who follow me, you know NYT Columnist Thomas Friedman is one of my favorite writers.  I learn a lot from him.  In his November  28, 2017 column:, “Forget Trump and Discover the World“,  he demonstrates how other countries are making big strides in creating a better tomorrow by moving forward.  For instance, India is developing its digital 21st century economy and we are missing it.  He points out how India is also building a new renewable energy power grid without any US technology.

Oh, and by the way, for those of you who want to preserve coal jobs, this 800-megawatt solar farm “was built with over 5,000 skilled and semiskilled workers,” said Kolli. “We believe the renewable energy sector will create over one million new generation jobs to meet the 175-gigawatt target set by Prime Minister Modi.”

Greenko builds these plants, he added, “in five months using Chinese panels and European inverter-grid integration technologies made in India.” (Notice the absence of U.S. technology in that loop.) Greenko is also making huge strides in battery technology to store solar energy, so it can be used when the sun is not shining, and the company is now in the midst of building the first grid-connected battery storage system integrated with its solar farms.

For me his points are captured in his last paragraph.

So while we’ve been following Trump’s tweets about bringing back “beautiful coal,” India built a billion-user ID network bigger than Twitter and giant solar power plants that are cheaper than coal.

Isn’t interesting how we are focused on how to recapture the past and the rest of the world has focused developing a better tomorrow.  Creating a better tomorrow has been the focus of all my work.  That better tomorrow is an idealized outcome we must imagine and then create.  For our desired future to be realized, the necessary precursors, such as a clean energy power grid and an organization of digital information technology must be in place.

A way to make this happen is …

Practice Paneugenesis using this 4 Step to Process

  1. Determine Desired Idealized Outcome
  2. Develop Necessary Precursors to make Desired Outcome Possible
  3. Optimize the Process to Develop Skills and abilities that  Precursors possible, and
  4. Plot Progress to document, demonstrate, and celebrate Improvement

The world is moving forward toward a better tomorrow.  It seems our distractions are causing the US to be left behind.

We can move forward and contribute toward creating a better tomorrow.  The first necessary step is to look past what is wrong and imagine what could be, that idealized outcome.  We then must roll up our sleeves and work hard toward creating it.  As I have documented, moving forward to create more positives, effectively eliminates, makes irrelevant and or effectively prevents problems. In this way, even if problems aren’t a problem, we all get to enjoy the better tomorrow developed.

I look forward to hearing about the progress you make in generating comprehensive improvements by practicing pervasive, reciprocal, selfish, selfless, synergistic acts by practicing paneugenesis.  This means you are creating all good so everyone and everything benefits!
