Ginsburg Widened the Circle of Inclusion & Equality

We all mourn the passing of Ruth Ginsburg. She made a powerful POSITIVE impact on all of us. Although she is known for her work to help women’s rights, her work was about creating a more just and perfect union by expanding inclusion and equality. She was passionate about her causes but human enough to be good to all. I noted this when Justice Scalia passed, someone who had drastically different views than her, yet they still had a friendship (see Honoring Justice Scalia – Dare to Disagree).

Justice Ginsburg’s life is something we can all strive toward, that is to aim to help lift everyone up. The Washington posted this interesting article about her, Ginsburg’s vision led us to a better America. We can do the same. I am impressed that she was able to make such a large difference in her life without trying to legislate from the bench. She believed and demonstrated how she could help build a better system by working with the other parts of government. She read her dissent in the case of Lilly Ledbetter and then said now the ball is in your court congress. After, congress did take the ball and passed legislation to promote equal pay.

If you don’t know much about her, I recommend you watch both of the excellent movies recently released about her life, “On the Basis of Sex” and “RBG”. The NYTimes described those movies here, Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The Films About Her Life. Together these movies provide a good overview of her life, yet she did so much more. It appears you can Stream “RBG” on Hulu or Amazon Video and you can see “On the Basis of Sex”  on Amazon or Showtime (trailers for both below). I hope both will be made more widely available.

Although she was a small woman, she had a GIANT impact on all our lives. Each of us and our the world is better because of her work. She was a prime example of how to Practice Paneugenesis because she generated comprehensive improvements by creating pervasive, reciprocal, selfish, selfless, synergistic interactions so everyone and everything benefits.  #SelfishSelflessSynergy.

Please share how her good work benefitted you and how you will pay it forward.

MLK Day FOR Everyone’s Benefit

I was in an MLK march today. I am all FOR equality for all because then everyone benefits. Being for things that improve the system benefits everyone. Justice for all!

We are all one system and we all must work together to create the best outcome. If one part attempts to take the most, it hurts us all. What is most important is how we all support each other and help each other so we can all be better. It all about how we build, maintain and continually improve relationships. Relationship with each other, with organizations, between organizations, with nature, and so much more.

If one part is not doing their best and not contributing what it can, it hurts everyone. For that reasons we should all work at helping all do all they can, help all reach their potential. MLK Day helps us realize what we can do to enable all of us to work together better. Making sure we all have the ability, capacity and potential to achieve our potential helps all of us do better so the whole system works better.

For instance, higher wages are good, however they must be earned. Pride can only be felt by people when they know the money was earned.

Money follows, it cannot lead.

Money given that was not earned does not create a better outcome for the worker or society, overall its just shifts issues. We all should work toward making life meaningful and valuable.

As Paul Collier explains in his excellent book, The Future of Capitalism, our basic drives are for belongingness and esteem. Building a better world where we all care and help each other and do jobs that improve our world can help everyone thrive by increasing both belongingness and esteem.

Very prophetically W. Edwards Deming declared:

Defend your rights, you lose

By this he was saying that if one just fights to make their part of the system better without understanding how it effects the whole system will be short sighted. I am trying to explain how this relates and this Deming Institute Podcast may help. I encourage you to listen.

This motivates me even more to Practice Paneugenesis because, at its core, paneugenesis helps us build stronger relationships with everyone and everything. I look forward to hearing about how you generate comprehensive improvements by creating pervasive, reciprocal, selfish, selfless, synergistic interactions from which everyone and everything benefits. Make it a Great Week!

Gender Equality is about Making Things Better

If we are going to make society better for everyone, it must be better for all not just a select few in the name of equality. W. Edwards Deming, the great quality management guru explained, “Defend your rights, you lose.” His point was that changes cannot be about just individuals doing better but about helping the whole system function better. When the system work better, everyone benefits.

Another way to say this is I how I have documented  Prevention Can’t Work and Problems are Irrelevant and Fixing Problems is Isufficient, Ineffective, & Inefficient because eliminating problems does not mean we get what we want. To get what we want, as is made clear with the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, we must cause it to happen. To cause desired outcomes we must move beyond problems to a focus on improvement for all.

Michael Kimmel’s TED presentation provides a great example of this thinking with, “Why gender equality is good for everyone — men included“.  Although his presentation seems to be about women’s rights, really it is about a better way so everyone and everything benefits. In the presentation he uses data to describe actions taken to create a better world also lead to an end of inequality. This of course is how to Practice Paneugenesis by generating comprehensive improvements by creating interactions so everyone and everything benefits. Enjoy:

I look forward hearing about how you make the world better as it also eliminates or makes irrelevant things that decrease our quality of life.
